Volume 2: Surface Noise

File under: SFX, sound effects, assets, noise
Code: 2021A01

These clips of surface noise from vinyl albums are perfect for your next film, game, radio play, industrial album, or hauntological drone. The tracks have been transcribed from obscure records released in the 1960s.

A variety of vinyl sounds are included: 6 needle drops, 6 mid grooves (from between tracks), and no fewer than 12 inner grooves. These runout sections are particularly useful for creating a creepy atmosphere. They can also be used for locked grooves, quite nice for layering over a repeating section of music.

Experiment with filtering, EQ, and different volume levels for maximum effect. Though each of these samples has been taken from a long player (LP) you can speed up the files by 35% to get sounds appropriate for 45 rpm single play (SP) records. But don't use these clips for 78 rpm records, as that surface noise is quite different.

Combine these selections with the sounds on Volume 1 to get noisier clips. These selections deliberately focus on the vinyl sound itself, rather than an excess of hiss or static.

There are 24 tracks (6 minutes) of uncompressed stereo audio (16-bit 48 kHz). The open license is unrestrictive with this credit: "(c) 2021 Robin Parmar CC BY 4.0".
